RTE’s Joe Duffy will the main attraction at a public event in Muckross House, Killarney, this weekend.

The broadcaster will give a special talk on the untold story of the young lives lost during Easter 1916, based on his best-selling 2015 book, Children of the Rising.

Forty children, aged 16 years and under, were among the 300 civilians killed in the 1916 crossfire.

Joe spent three years researching the lives of these children for a documentary and book.

Venue: The Schoolhouse, Muckross House by

Date: Saturday, October 7

Time: 7.30pm

Admission is FREE but seats must be pre-booked by contacting 064 6670162.

Further information: library@muckross-house.ie

Joe is one of Ireland’s best-known presenters, hosting both Liveline on Radio and Liveline Callback and Spirit Level on TV. He is the author of the Children of the Rising, the untold story of the young lives lost during Easter 1916. Released in October 2015, the book topped the Nielsen Bookscan Hardback Nonfiction chart for several weeks.

Using family sources, newspaper reports, census returns, compensation claims, and birth and death certificates the list of the dead children is a glimpse into the lives of both poor and rich, living side by side in a cramped, crowded city. One boy, known only as ‘Male’ O’Toole, was thought to have lived hand to mouth at a workhouse for many years.

The vast majority of the children died from gunshot wounds, according to their death certificates. One died from “cannonading”. There were no inquests. With the exception of some notorious atrocities like the North King street massacre, and a few events where the Rebels admitted the death of civilians, it is not possible to say which side’s bullets killed most of the children.

Children of the Rising, by Joe Duffy, is published by Hachette, €19.99.

Brendan O’Carroll has called for the book to be on “the curriculum for every child in school’.

The general election of December 1918 saw women here voting for the first time – though they still had to be over 30 years of age and land owners, restrictions that weren’t lifted until ten years later, in 1928.

2018 is also the 100th anniversary of the election of Ireland’s first female member of parliament – Countess Markiewicz.

In commemoration of these historic developments, RTE broadcaster and historian Dr. Myles Dungan is putting together a team of Ireland’s most sought-after women historians to offer libraries, county councils, country houses, history groups and festivals a unique package of lectures and presentations on the changing lives and roles
of Mná na hÉireann a century ago.

Catriona Crowe, former Head of Special Projects at the National Archives of Ireland; Dr. Kate O’Malley, of the Royal Irish Academy; and author Liz Gillis will be among the key contributors.

This 2018 roadshow builds on Dr. Dungan’s hugely successful history roadshows The Fighting Irish (2010+), The Great War Roadshow (2014/15) and Paths To Freedom (2016/17).

National College Awareness Week takes place this year from November 20-26.

Aimed at promoting a college-going culture, and increasing the numbers who progress to third level, particularly in areas where that’s not usually the case, College Awareness Week is an important tool in spreading the word that having a post-secondary education plan is “both important and achievable”.

The campaign goals, supported by national agencies including the NAPD, HEA, Department of Education and Skills, Vincent de Paul, IGC and IBEC, include…

Celebrate the importance of going to college

Showcase local role models who have gone to college

Helping students to become college-ready

Last year, there were 659 events across 27 counties. This year, Pegasus is offering county councils, libraries and schools collaboration on a new project – Ready For College.

Ready For College – University Preparation Courses

Our academic consultants, who have taught at second and third level in colleges across Ireland, the UK and the USA, have developed a set of modules aimed at introducing Leaving Cert students, new college entrants and mature students to the key writing, research and study skills that they will need to be successful in college.

These US-style modules cover key aspects including structuring an essay, taking notes, researching and referencing, and include…

Winning The Points Race – Choosing Colleges & Courses

Writing for life – letters, emails, reports, CVs

Writing for College

Crash Course: Grammar, Syntax, and Usage

Planning – Part I (Reading and Research)

Planning – Part II (Brainstorming)

Thesis Statements: Crafting a Clear Argument

Outlining

Drafting

Conclusions

Editing and Revising

Citation, Attribution & Avoiding Plagiarism

Third level education is about learning at a higher level – developing skills relating to critical thinking, building supported, substantive arguments, analysing information and the critical use of data and multiple sources. These are university-level skills – but new college entrants will benefit hugely from working on the foundations of these skills, even before entering third level. Such skills will also help Leaving Cert students, and are key attributes that employers value.

Recent UK research suggests that courses designed to teach sixth form students essential university-level study skills also significantly improves their A-level results (University of East Anglia).
